This is an editorial ranking, not a lab score. Each tool was considered against the same framework:

  • First playable result: a child should be able to make or meaningfully remix a game without spending the whole first session on setup.
  • Ownership: the tool should let the child choose rules, art, controls or story rather than only follow fixed answers.
  • Learning progression: there should be room to move from simple instructions towards variables, conditions, functions or text.

One strong opinion shaped the list: a spectacular 3D world is a poor first project if the child can't explain the rule that makes it work. Start smaller. The second version of a tiny game tells you more about learning than the first hour spent choosing assets.

1. Scratch — best overall first game-making tool

Best fit: roughly ages 8–12, or younger children working beside a parent.

Scratch takes first place because it keeps the distance between an idea and a working result short. A child can choose a sprite, connect event and movement blocks, press the green flag and see what happens. The official Scratch parent page says the platform is primarily designed for ages 8–16. It also points families to getting-started resources and an offline editor.

That mix matters. Beginners can make a two-rule game, while a more confident child can add variables, clones, messages and custom blocks. Remixing also makes code visible: you can ask your child to identify one rule they changed rather than admiring a finished screen.

Limitation: the online community is part of Scratch's appeal, but publishing, comments and usernames need family rules. Use the offline route or keep a project unshared until you have checked it together.

2. Microsoft MakeCode Arcade — best for a quick playable game

Best fit: confident primary learners and early secondary students who like pixel games.

MakeCode Arcade earns second place for its built-in game screen. The official intro tutorial moves from blocks to a running sprite quickly, and the documentation offers complete tutorials, lessons, courses and examples made with blocks or JavaScript. That gives a family two useful routes: follow one short tutorial, then remake the same mechanic with a new character or rule.

It is particularly good for learning the game loop without calling it a lecture. Buttons, collisions, score and sprite movement all produce immediate feedback. A child can test after every two or three blocks.

Limitation: pixel-game conventions still bring cognitive load. A child who is new to coordinates, variables and keyboard controls may need an adult to reduce the first project to one screen and one goal. Save or download the project deliberately; browser storage is easy to forget.

3. Code.org Game Lab — best guided bridge to JavaScript

Best fit: ages 12–18 according to the current Game Lab page, especially learners who want a structured course.

Code.org Game Lab ranks third because its age guidance and learning route are unusually clear. The official Game Lab page describes a browser environment for animations and games using blocks or JavaScript, lists ages 12–18, and links self-paced and curriculum-based introductions.

For an older beginner, that structure can beat a blank canvas. Start with a sample such as a bouncing or moving character, then ask for one change to score, speed or difficulty. Switching between block and text views can help a learner see that both representations control the same behaviour.

Limitation: Game Lab is a better match for laptops and Chromebooks than phones or small tablets. It also targets older learners than Scratch. A younger child may get a faster win in Sprite Lab or another course selected from Code.org's current catalogue.

4. GDevelop — best for older kids who want a fuller game engine

Best fit: older primary students with support, and teenagers who have outgrown a block-only editor.

GDevelop sits fourth because it offers much more production scope, but that scope comes with more decisions. Its official game studios and education page describes an open-source editor, event-based game logic, JavaScript options and free access to get started. The current education page also distinguishes free and education features, so families should check which cloud, class-management and publishing features are included today.

This is the pick for a child who already understands sprites, events and conditions and now wants scenes, behaviours, a debugger and broader export choices. Use a template, remove half the planned features, and make one level work before adding menus or multiplayer.

Limitation: the interface and publishing choices can distract a beginner from the code. Cloud services, AI credits and export limits can also change. Read the current plan comparison instead of assuming every feature is free.

5. Roblox Studio — best for motivated 3D creators with close supervision

Best fit: teenagers and mature pre-teens whose main motivation is building a 3D Roblox experience.

Roblox Studio ranks fifth because its creative ceiling is high and its setup, account and online ecosystem require more parent attention. The official Studio setup guide says the free application runs on Windows and Mac and requires a Roblox account. The Studio overview covers 3D building, scripting, testing and publishing.

For the right learner, building a tiny obstacle course can turn passive play into design. Keep the first brief narrow: one start, three obstacles, one finish, then change one physics or scoring rule. Ask the child to playtest with you before publishing anything.

Limitation: this tool connects to a large social platform and an economy. Account security, chat, public assets, content maturity and monetisation deserve a real family conversation. Roblox's own account guidance tells students not to share passwords and warns against “free Robux” offers. Treat supervision as part of the project, not an optional extra.

Which tool should your child try first?

  • Choose Scratch for the safest general starting point and the easiest remix conversation.
  • Choose MakeCode Arcade when a playable pixel game will motivate your child to keep testing.
  • Choose Code.org Game Lab for an older beginner who benefits from a guided course.
  • Choose GDevelop when your child already understands basic game logic and wants a fuller engine.
  • Choose Roblox Studio only when 3D creation is the motivation and you can supervise the account and sharing choices.

Device reality can decide the answer. Check your operating system, browser, school-device restrictions and whether an account is needed before promising a particular tool. None of the five is “best” for every child.

Run a one-week trial before paying for anything

Give the chosen tool three short sessions. In session one, remix or follow a starter project. In session two, change one rule without restarting. In session three, ask the child to show the game and explain a bug they fixed.

Keep four notes: what the child chose, what they could explain, what they did when the game failed, and whether they wanted to make a second version. Those observations are more useful than asking, “Did you have fun?” Fun matters, but ownership and persistence tell you whether the tool fits.
