How to prepare for Melbourne Selective Entry

Understand the system first

Victoria has four Years 9–12 selective-entry high schools: Nossal in Berwick, Suzanne Cory in Werribee, Mac.Robertson Girls' High in Melbourne, and Melbourne High in South Yarra. The common statewide process is mainly for Year 9 entry.

2027 entry current cycle

Applications open on 2026-03-02 and close on 04-24, and the exam is scheduled on 06-20. This window is already historical/current evidence for a specific period; to prepare for the next period you must go back to the official page to check the new date.

Victoria's cap is designed to limit the proportion of standard and principal-discretion offers available to the same source school. It is not an individual score for your child, a school quality rating or a guarantee of an offer. Don’t extrapolate a “safety score” based on hearsay.

Complete family dual plan

Go through the official courses and enrollment pages one by one, instead of just looking at the list.
Test outbound, return and unexpected pick-up and drop-off separately during school peak hours.
Ask the child if he or she would be willing to change the school, commute, and peer environment.
Save two sets of curriculum, support and activity questions for the target school and the local school.
For Year 10+ students, please contact the school directly. The Year 9 common process cannot be applied.
