What are the pathways for high-ability children in Brisbane?On-campus support, enrichment, Brilliant Futures and Queensland Academies

Queensland does not have a NSW OC style unified route. First ask how the current school supports it, and then differentiate between enrichment and later selective entry.

The Queensland Department of Education says all state schools should support gifted, talented, high ability, high potential or high achieving students, but specific programs are decided by the school and the community.

Talk to your current school first

Don't just take a test or parent label and ask for a set plan; bringing work, class feedback, and ongoing observation are more helpful.

Queensland Academies is not the primary school entrance

The three Academies focus on Creative Industries, Health Sciences, and Science Mathematics and Technology, respectively, for senior years, with IB Diploma as the core. The standard entrance to QACI is Year 10, and admission is automatic without catchment.

The QACI Year 10 2027 page shows late applications accepted on 2026-06-10 and lists a $270 standard / $300 late application fee; these amounts and status must be reconfirmed on the day of payment.

Brilliant Futures To be watched separately

QACI Brilliant Futures is a two-year preparation/enrichment initiative in Years 7–8. The 2027/8 page was open to current Year 6 at the time and listed the 2026-10-17 test. Participation does not guarantee a Year 10 QACI offer.

Record for each path: what the child actually does, who provides feedback, hours per week, commute, costs, exit rules, wellbeing risks, and the date of the next formal review. Choose a challenge that lasts, not the project with the loudest name.
