Put the holiday window in the calendar first

The South Australian Department for Education lists the Spring 2026 holidays as Saturday 26 September to Sunday 11 October. Term 4 starts on Monday 12 October.

This is the right starting point because a holiday activity only helps if it fits the days your family is actually free. If your child attends an independent or Catholic school, check that school’s calendar too; this guide does not assume every school uses the state-school dates.

Use a three-part plan before every timetable is published

Many local Spring programs will publish later. You do not need to wait with an empty week, and you do not need to promise children an activity before a venue has released its booking terms.

1. Choose one scheduled activity that your child genuinely wants to attend. 2. Keep one flexible indoor visit that does not depend on a limited holiday session. 3. Save one at-home option for rain, tired days or a sibling-friendly reset.

This gives your family a real plan while leaving room for a nearby council or museum program if a suitable one is later published.

Flexible North Terrace visit: Pull Pop Push

Pull Pop Push at the State Library Gallery is open until 24 January 2027. The official page lists free entry, the ground-floor Spence Wing location and the Library’s regular opening hours.

The exhibition explores pop-up books, moving paper mechanisms and large-scale displays. It is a useful low-pressure choice when your child wants to look, talk and make connections at their own pace rather than stay for a fixed class.

Before you leave, check the Library’s current opening hours and any public-holiday closure. You can decide on the day how long the visit should be, then add a nearby park, library stop or packed lunch only if that suits your family.

Flexible free drop-in: Ahoy Maties!

Ahoy Maties! is a free family drop-in at the Treasures Wall, Spence Wing Level 1. The State Library says bookings are not required. Families design and colour a ship’s flag at the activity table.

It can work well beside Pull Pop Push because both are in the State Library. The official event page says the State Library, Art Gallery and Museum tram stop is just outside the building, with nearby bus stops and Adelaide railway station on North Terrace.

This is an adult-accompanied family activity, not a drop-off program. If that is difficult for your day, use it as a short stop rather than planning around it as the only activity.

One scheduled choice for older children: Start Art Book Club

Start Art Book Club is scheduled for Sunday 4 October, 12–1pm. It is free but requires a booking. The official page recommends the program for ages 8 to 13 and says it begins at the Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace before moving to the State Library for writing and art-making.

For an 8–12 year old, this is a clear single-session choice: there is a stated time, a meeting point and an activity. Check the official booking page before you rely on it, because a free session can still reach capacity or change its registration process.

For younger siblings, choose a separate nearby plan rather than assuming they can join this age-targeted session.

Low-cost home day: Get creative at home

The State Library’s Get creative at home page has collection-inspired hands-on activities for children and families. It includes ideas such as printable board games, a bookmark project and a build-a-bug activity.

An at-home day is not a failed holiday plan. It can be the day that gives children time to make something, lets siblings work at different speeds and keeps your travel budget for the outing that matters most to them.

Choose one project, gather ordinary materials first and let the finished page, model or game become the child’s small holiday output.

Costs and checks that still matter when entry is free

Free entry does not mean a day has no cost. Before confirming an outing, write down:

travel, parking and food costs;
whether an adult must stay;
the current opening hours or booking terms;
what your child will actually do there; and
one nearby or at-home backup if the session changes.

If a school-holiday page does not yet give a current age, date, price and booking rule, treat it as a watchlist, not a promised activity. The South Australian Museum school-holiday page is one official place to recheck as new program details are released.

Every family has a different travel limit, budget and child energy level. It is fine to start with two good days rather than fill every day. A plan that your family can comfortably change is usually more useful than a packed timetable.
